Careers In Construction Month
When you think of careers in the construction industry, you probably think of people in hard hats operating heavy machinery and performing physical labor. But the construction industry is way more diverse and ever expanding.
Just ask our commissioning agent, Greg Hoover. Although he may not be part of the building team that develops and constructs the physical structure, Greg plays a key role during the construction process.
“Commissioning agents are involved with the construction process from project inception through completion,” Greg explained. “The agent guides the building owner with design requirements, making sure MEP systems are installed
properly, and testing these systems to make sure they are running as specified by the design engineer.”
Commissioning agents are also the liaison between the entire project team which includes the owner, general contractor, engineers, and architect. It’s their responsibility as an independent third-party authority to assist in developing the owner’s basis of design (BOD) and the owner’s project requirements (OPR) and relay that information to the project team. Another key factor a commissioning agent provides during the construction process is conducting and coordinating meetings, developing and maintaining a construction issues log and creating a commissioning plan, all in an effort to provide a smooth and reliable process from start to finish.
“One thing about this job is that you have to be patient and mobile,” noted Greg. “Things tend to not work out immediately. You have to be ready to adjust for the coming, changing conditions. But you get a lot of satisfaction when the project is complete. It’s a thrill watching over time an empty plot of land becoming a beautiful operating and thriving structure.”
Commissioning agents are just one of a multitude of different career paths to choose from in the construction industry. If you specialize in an area such as electrical or HVAC and have a strong analytical, communication, and management skills, as well as thorough knowledge of building and construction, commissioning may be the perfect job for you.
